VSM Surf

VSM Surf is a start-up that aims to revolutionize surf forecasting. Our goal is to create accurate simulations of surf breaks around the world by combining advanced wave modelling software with bathymetric and swell forecast data. This technology is not just about forecasting surf conditions – it’s about enhancing the surf experience, expanding forecasting abilities, and empowering the surf industry.

The idea behind VSM Surf was born out of surf trip to Kauai, HI in December of 2022. While anxious to catch some of the long-period northwest winter swell around Hanalei Bay, it became apparent that webcams were not going to be the solution to finding what breaks were working. In fact, there is currently only one surf webcam on the entire island of Kauai. The only way to figure out where to surf on Kauai requires local knowledge, and/or a lot of patience (and driving). But there must be a better solution to this problem, and not just on Kauai, but for all of the countless surf breaks around the world. Well as luck would have it, the US military already funded a solution to this problem by backing the development of the world’s most advanced surf zone modeling software. The purpose of this software framework is to function as a digital environment for the US Navy to safely test the performance of amphibious vehicles in realistic surf zone conditions, as well as to plan landing craft missions. We are now working to co-opt this technology exclusively for creating realistic models of various surf breaks.

We currently seek funding to further optimize our already proven software for the specific purpose of wave simulation. In addition, we require funding to support bathymetric surveys that will need to be conducted on various surf breaks around the world. Do you want to be a part of the future?
